Director, Urban Design City

Robert Freedman,
Director of Urban Design for the City of Toronto is a native Torontonian who has worked in a wide
variety of urban and suburban environments in both the public and
private sectors. Mr. Freedman has an interdisciplinary background
including a law degree from the University of Toronto, a degree in architecture from the University of British Columbia and a Masters in Urban Planning & Design
from the City University of New York.
Between
1993 and 2002 Robert worked with Urban Design Associates, an award
winning Architecture and Urban Design firm based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on projects in over twenty cities across the United States. Projects included Downtown revitalization plans,
urban growth plans, transit oriented developments and sustainable new
neighbourhood designs.
Since
joining the City of Toronto Robert has taken the lead on a number of major
initiatives including design guideline studies for infill townhouses
and tall buildings. Robert has also played a leading role in
establishing a Design Review Panel for the City. Robert is active as a
founding member of the new national organization – Council
for Canadian Urbanism (CCanU), has authored several articles for
Architecture and Planning Journals and is a frequent lecturer on urban
design, architecture and planning issues.
